8-14-2009 Friday - Boys' Fishing Trip in Mammoth

The boys did their annual Mammoth fishing trip and this year they took Jeff's brother and boys. They had a good time together.

Here are Jeff, Drew, and Luke ready for a day of fishing! Luke has his own waders.

Drew and Jeff caught 3 snakes and the boys loved taking turns holding them!

Luke caught a lot of fish and is really learning how to hook them and bring them in now.

Drew is an old pro now and helped all the boys catch fish.

Brad caught the winner - a spotted trout!

Luke did some rock climbing and zip lining with his cousins too! The guys caught a total of 97 fish in two full days of fishing. Not too shabby!

8-12-2009 Wednesday - Bird In The House!

A bird flew into our house just now! Drew caught it on the stairs and let it go. It had a pretty little yellow chest. We've had a few of these happen through the years. I love open doors!

8-11-2009 Tuesday - Fiddler On The Roof

Last night, I went with some friends to see...

It was playing at the Orange County Performing Arts Center.

The original Tevye played by Topol performed to a standing ovation.
These were the reviews:

"One of the most glowing creations in the history of musical theatre." –THE NEW YORK TIMES

Topol, the original Tevye, performs the role that made him legendary in Fiddler On The Roof, the Tony® Award winning musical that has captured the hearts of people all over the world with its universal appeal. Never has any other musical so magically woven music, dance, poignancy and laughter into such an electrifying and unforgettable experience. Based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem, Fiddler On The Roof has been lauded by critics again and again, and won the hearts of people all around the world. Filled with a rousing, heartwarming score, which includes "Tradition," "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," "If I Were A Rich Man" and "Sunrise, Sunset," Fiddler On The Roof is a timeless classic. Relive a glorious tradition with Fiddler On The Roof.

We went to The Canyon Restaurant for dinner before. We had a great night!

8-9-2009 Sunday - Artisan Bread

Okay, so I consider myself a pretty good cook. I mean, I can follow a recipe and not have problems. I will even experiment a little here and there. Jeff and the kids love my food, so I must be doing something right. My mom was a great cook and she taught me a lot of the basics. I'm trying to do the same with my kids. But the one thing I really haven't been able to conquer is bread. Yuck! I just seem to never get the yeast and warm water right on. The recipes I've tried never come out the way they are supposed to (gummy, too heavy, they fall) and it seems like it takes forever.

But two weeks ago Borders was having a sale and I came across this book that looked so great I had to get it. I love pretty pictures in cookbooks and this one has a lot of them. I wanted to have moist, dense, and chewy bread with a brown crackling crust - like the ones you get in Europe or buy for 6 dollars a loaf at the market. But I didn't want to have to go to the store and eat it the same day or else have dried out bread. I wanted to be able to make it at home whenever I wanted it.

So today I got up the courage to try a recipe in this cookbook. Noel and Shera helped me measure and mix it in this bosch bread mixer Jeff had given to me a few years ago. (This was my first time to ever use the machine by the way!)

I followed the directions exactly and was quite nervous to see what the outcome would be.

But I couldn't believe how beautiful the bread turned out!

Not only did it look good, but it made the whole kitchen smell good! The batch of dough made four loaves.

Heidi was clamoring for some too!

We ate all four loaves tonight either plain or with butter or homemade strawberry jam! It was delicious! Finally, a recipe that I can do! I don't feel right about giving this recipe out because it just doesn't seem fair to the cookbook authors. (They actually ask in the book to not share the recipes.) But if you are looking for a great artisan bread cookbook that is quick and easy, this is the one for you! I highly recommend it and can't wait to try other beautifully delicious recipes from this book!

8-3-2009 - 8-8-2009 EFY Adventure - Calgary, Canada

Holly went to EFY (Especially For Youth) church camp this year in Calgary. Every year she has gone some place new - Santa Barbara, Provo, New York, Calgary. Her adventurous side just takes over sometimes as it did on this trip. She flew out early Monday morning by herself, caught a taxi and went to the University of Calgary to meet up with her EFY group. She said it was her best EFY yet!

Her roomie, Barbara, is from America but lives in Saudi Arabia! They were the two "foreign girls" in the company.

Her favorite speaker, Brother Stonehocker, was a seminary teacher for one of the boys in her company. She went to four of his classes!

There were 8 boys and 8 girls in their company. They did everything together and all got along so well. They were very tight.

Holly also loved her counselor, Matt Taylor. They really hit it off!

Even though the boys are all play kissing her in this photo, there were no love triangles in the group. Everyone was just good friends - as far as we all know...

8-8-2009 Saturday - The Aquarium of the Pacific

I took the kids and Noel's two friends to the Long Beach Aquarium today. It was perfect timing since we had to pick up Holly at the airport anyway.

Carissa, Shera, Luke, Noel and Aubry watched the scuba diver in the giant kelp forest tank feed the fish and sharks.

They got to touch the manta rays and sand sharks at this exhibit.

This ray slid right up the glass in front of Luke. The bottom of it looks like a big smile! The kids loved the many colors of starfish too!

This shark swam right toward the kids and they freaked out - started screaming! It had the most terrifying teeth of all the sharks in the tank!

Cool Moon Jellies!

I love this photo I got of this octopus! I directly came home and put it on my desktop!

Across from the aquarium is a Ferris Wheel we went on and we got smoothies right by there too!

We could see the Queen Mary from the top of the Ferris Wheel. It was a gorgeous day today!

When I was a little girl my dad would take me to The Pike, which was a year round carnival fun zone. They had an old wooden roller coaster too that was the most awesome thing around! That was before Magic Mountain and Space Mountain. They tore down The Pike several years ago, but apparently kept the name for this shopping mall that went in its place. It was a little nostalgic for me and I bet it is for you if you remember this place.

After we left Long Beach, we went to LAX to pick up Holly from her trip to EFY in Calgary, Canada. Then we came back to Mission Viejo and met Jeff for yummy tepan dinner at Shoguns. We missed Drew being there as he was at the church singles recharge.

Here are the kids and the shark tank!

8-4-2009 Tuesday - Lighting Up Our Day!

Holly went to EFY this week up in Calgary, Canada. These are church camps they have all over the country. She is so adventurous, of course she chooses to go all by herself to the one in Canada! She was so cute, she texted me in every phase of her travels there so I wouldn't worry. She made it safely to the University of Calgary and her EFY group. She must be having a great time because I haven't heard from her since! She comes home on Saturday - and we can't wait to hear of her experiences.
But life goes on at home and I'm trying to keep kids busy and having fun during the summer.
Soooo.....

Today we did another fun project. We made summer stained glass votives. We sprayed blue stained glass paint on mason jars, from darker on top to little or none on the bottom.

With how hot it has been, they dried in about 20 minutes outside. Then Shera and Luke put little sea shells on the bottom, and Noel and I put sand in ours. Next we added stickers, a little metallic paint marker (Noel's and mine) and then put in the candle.

Luke had bright colored fish stickers on his.

Shera had sandcastle stickers on hers.

Noel did sea shell stickers.

I had butterflies on mine.

They all turned out really pretty. The kids picked out their own sheet of stickers and used their imagination to create them.

Now we get to enjoy them this summer at our dinner table every night. We can't wait for Holly to come home and see them!

7-31-2009 Allred Summer Birthday Bash!

Our family gets together every few months to celebrate our birthdays. We always have one in the summertime. Last night it was a barbecue and swimming at my moms home.

We had wrapped up all the tie dyed tops and stamped little gift tags and were ready to bring birthday gifts for everyone for the year!

Heather and Grams!

The shirts were a big hit and the kids put them on right away.

The kids swam...

And we all ate appetizers...

We had barbecued beef, chicken and lamb kabobs. We had corn on the cob and an array of salads.

Lisa sat at the kids' table.

Luke, August, and Shera made
funny faces.

Holly and Olivia had some quiet time talking about what? Boys!

We had banana and coconut pies for birthday cake! Mmmmm......
