2-15-2010 Monday - Dim Sum with the Penrods

Today we took the Penrod family for the Chinese lunch, Dim Sum, in Irvine. While we were waiting to be seated, we ran over to the Asian Market and picked up a few items. We got seaweed, rice, sweet treats and cakes from the Chinese Bakery!

Fawn was excited to try all the new foods, but I couldn't talk her into the chicken feet - the dish on the bottom right.

Corrine, Emma, Carey and Fawn did try just about everything though.

Here is Holly and Emma with Barbecued Pork Buns and seasoned rice wrapped and steamed in tea leaves.

Here I am trying the cold Jellyfish. It was marinated in vinegar and seasonings. Jeff, Fawn, Carey, Holly, Corrine, Luke, and Shera all tried it too!

After lunch, we walked across the center near the pond and went to Lollycup for Boba. That is basically a Chinese fruit smoothie (all sorts of flavors) with black balls of tapioca at the bottom you can suck up with a straw and either chew or spit them out at each other. Sometimes the kids have wars with them! I know it sounds gross, but the kids have fun with it!

2-14-2010 Sunday - Happy St. Valentine's Day!

I heard somewhere that they officially dropped the "St." from St. Valentine's Day because it made it a "Christian Holiday". Anyone else notice that it has just "magically disappeared" in the last few years??? It makes me sad...

Holly and I were home over the weekend for her voice competition master class, so we were together Valentine's morning just the two of us. She surprised me with a special breakfast all set up with the nice silver and crystal and even roses!

Holly made eggs, sausage, and German Pancakes which she dyed pink!
It was all delicious!

Later on, Holly made heart shaped sugar cookies. When Jeff and the rest of the kids came home, Noel made dinner for us! I didn't have to cook all day - now that's a great Valentine's treat! She made teriyaki chicken bowls with pink rice!
It was so yummy!

Afterward, we opened a few gifts. I made little photo albums for each of the kids of the year 2009.

Jeff gave me this awesome moose he found in Park City and was saving for me!
Did you know that moose are my favorite animals???

Luke gave me a personalized "I Love You" mug he made in his class.

I gave Jeff a monthly calendar with photos of our family on it for his office at work.

Shera gave me a giant homemade Valentine's card. Noel made a beautiful card trimmed in ribbon for me too! Then we all watched the movie, "Enchanted" together. It was a very simple Valentine's Day, but very fun.

2-16-2010 Tuesday - President's Weekend at the River!

Jeff took Luke, Shera, Noel and her friend, Aubry, to the river this President's Weekend.

They ATV'd

This is the "Haunted Forest" that we drive through. It's a curvy, crazy ride through it!

Noel and Aubry went down by the river's edge on the go cart. The river was very low this weekend.

Skipping rocks on the water...

They went on about a two hour ride up the mountain across from the trailer park and took this photo of their view.

The Colorado River.

They had a fire and barbecued hot dogs and burgers one night too. They watched movies, played glow in the dark tag, played other board games, took naps, and got treats from the general store also. Good times for them.

2-12-2010 Friday - Circus! Circus!

Last Friday, Holly went with her friend, Kyra, to the circus down in Balboa Park, San Diego. They saw all sorts of amazing tricks and stunts! Here they are holding a 7 foot python!

The coolest part is that Kyra's uncle is the Ringmaster, and her cousins are acrobat performers in the circus. They got to go behind the scenes and hang out with all the kids in the show beforehand. The kids do all their classes online and have friends all over the state where they perform. Holly had a great time!

Here is a sample of one of the many stunts they saw!

2-10-2010 Wednesday - MUD FOOTBALL!! ARGGGHHHH!!!

With all this rain we've been having, how can you resist a good 'ol fashion game of mud football?

Not these YSA's!
Can you find Drew???
Two sisters, Michelle and Megan Moody, are in here too!

They played last Saturday down by the Los Alisos river bed and golf course.

They started playing here after getting kicked off the Lake Fields.
This used to be all green! It gets super slippery!

Everyone wears their swim suits and go barefoot. After they are all good and muddy and exhausted, they rinse off in a nice mud bath!

Then they head over to our clubhouse and use the showers and then get in the spa to warm up.
Don't worry, they do rinse it down afterward!
Thank goodness!

2-8-2010 - Monday - We Are As The Anti-Nephi-Lehi's!

Jeff gave a great lesson for Family Night tonight on the Anti-Nephi-Lehi's. He talked about how they buried all of their weapons and covenanted not to use them anymore. Then he asked us to think of a sin that we struggle with and write it on this piece of paper.

We folded them up and went out to the garden. Jeff dug a hole and we all put our papers inside the hole. We promised to not commit the sin anymore just like in the story.

Jeff covered the hole back up with dirt. It was a very revealing thing to do because instead of saying we are not going to commit that particular sin anymore, we were physically getting rid of the sin. There was a feeling of finality and reality to it. It seemed more real to all of us.
Pretty intense, but pretty cool...

2-8-2010 Monday - My's Birthday Lunch

Today, we celebrated My Cao's birthday with lunch at Tutto Fresco. It was a nice getaway from all the daily "have to's". She is standing right next to me with Casey Chadwick, Valerie Sheldon, and Cheryl O'Bryant to the right. My, her husband and her two boys, Richard and Richmond are recent converts. She is so funny and we just love her!
Happy Birthday My!!!

2-5-2010 Friday - A Clean Craft Room!

Last Wednesday, I decided to clean out my craft room. When I can't see the tops of my two tables and computer counter, then I know it's time! So, from about 9am - 6pm that's all I did. Holly helped me out by picking up Noel, Shera, and Luke from school. And she also ordered Thai for dinner and picked it up for us too! (It's great having drivers in the family!) The floor was covered in photo boxes that I had been organizing since October. I finished putting them in boxes and now they are on my cabinet shelves set by the year. I still need to put them in albums though. I took care of all the books, wrapping paper, things that needed filing and fixing, and all of Holly's college stuff. It feels great to be free of so much clutter! Now my "creative juices" can flow!
So here's to a clean craft room!

1-30-2010 Saturday - Annie, the Beach, BJ's, and Disneyland!

While Holly, Jeff, and I were in Utah, Drew watched Noel, Shera, and Luke. He made it a really fun-filled weekend for them! Seriously...
Friday night he took the kids and Shera's friends - Emily and Devoree, and Nicole Priest to dinner at Jerry's Deli (best deli in O.C.). Then they went to see the musical "Annie" at the O.C. Performing Arts Center.

Saturday, after their morning jobs were finished, Drew took the kids to Laguna Beach! The water was cold, but that didn't stop them from getting wet!

Searching the tide pools...

Here are one of the starfish they found...

Luke warming up in a towel.

They all enjoyed the sunset on the cliffs...

Afterward, they went to BJ's for pizza and a pizookie (a cookie pizza). If you haven't tried one before - you gotta next time when you're in So. Cal.

On Sunday, The O'Bryant's took the kids to church and Drew went to the singles ward. Then he made beef stroganoff for dinner!

There was no school on Monday, so Andrea and Lucas took Luke and Shera to Disneyland. Drew took Noel and Aubrey to the mall and he went to his classes and then they all met up at Disneyland together. They stayed late and it was cold, so no one was there. They went on splash mountain 6 times in a row without getting off because there was no line! And can you believe, even though they were soaking wet, no one got sick! Everyone had a ball!
So, how'd you like to spend the weekend with Drew???

Here they are with the waves crashing around them at Laguna!

Drew loves to play tricks on Luke.
Watch Drew get Luke to taste pure vanilla extract!

I had to put this video in of my favorite original Annie, Andrea McArdle, who was the youngest nominated actress on Broadway at 13 years old!
Enjoy!

2-1-2010 Monday - Holly's College Campus Visits

Last Thursday, Jeff, Holly and I left warm California behind and visited the beautiful chilly state of Utah to look at the three universities that Holly has applied to for next fall.

Cheryl O'Bryant brought over a good luck gift for Holly. It was a CD of famous arias performed by the world's best opera singers!

THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH
Built in 1850, this is the oldest college campus in Utah. It is located in downtown Salt Lake City. The Park Building, in the center of campus, is the school's administration building. There are about 30,000 students here!

Cameron, a music major, gave us a tour of the school and the college of music. This was a gorgeous concert hall. Holly will be auditioning here at the end of February.

UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY
Utah State is located about two hours north of Salt Lake in the cute little college town of Logan. This started as an agriculture college and if you go here, you are called an "Aggie". You can't tell really from this photo, but the tree behind Jeff's head has a blue "A" step to the left of it. Traditions are huge here, but the biggest is to become a "True Aggie". To become a "True Aggie" you must be kissed at midnight on a full moon by another "True Aggie" on this step. Sometimes there will be an hour's wait to get up there!

Utah State's dorms were by far the best! The basement is really cute with different games, a big screen tv, a fifty's style kitchen, and music practice rooms.

It is also the coldest weather here too, averaging 10 degrees less than Salt Lake or Provo. It was about 25 degrees when we visited. Utah State has 16,000 students.
This is the beautiful Logan Temple!

BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY

BYU Provo has the biggest concentration of Mormons, having a 98 percent population. Everyone was smiling and having a good time around the whole campus (big contrast!). That's why they call it "Happy Valley".

Their library is almost completely underground and stretches across the length of two football fields. It is the number six best library in the nation! Holly saw six friends while visiting BYU. BYU has 30,000 students. Thirty percent of the school's students come from Utah and thirteen percent come from California.

Last December, Holly sent in a DVD with her singing three classical songs in German, Italian, and English. BYU prescreened 160 DVD's and chose only 30 students to come for a live audition. On Saturday morning, Holly had her voice audition at BYU. She was up against other college students, even juniors! Only 10 will be accepted into the program at BYU. We find out mid February if she is one of them. Wish her luck!!!

Holly's Grandma Starr gave her a very special gift while we were up in Utah. Holly's great great grandfather was a professional opera singer in Norway. He was fired after he joined the church and he and his family moved to America to be with the saints. These were two of his opera books Grandma Starr had and now has passed down to Holly. She loved them - what a treasure!
