1-20-2010 Wednesday - Poor Sweet Little Birdie vs. Bad Dogs

The other night we let Sasha and Heidi out in the backyard before bed for one last potty break. It was one of the really wet and rainy days, so they pretty much stayed on the patio. I guess the other little wild animals had the same idea because as I peeked outside to see how they were doing, I saw them playing with something. You know when dogs bat something around with their paws? Well, it was this poor sweet little finch!

I ran outside and pushed the dogs away! I picked it up and took it inside. It was still alive, so Holly got a warm towel and started prepping a little bed for it and took a couple of these photos. It was so soft and tiny in our hands. We could feel it breathing. And at one point it flapped its wings to try to fly away. But then it became still and passed away in our arms. We felt so bad for the little bird who used our home as a sanctuary, but then was betrayed by our little dogs...

BAD DOGS!!!
But they are still so cute, and I guess that is just nature. So I will keep them anyway.

Here is a video of our "Bird Sanctuary" in our backyard. We love having all of the wildlife to watch out our window.

1-19-2010 Tuesday - Noel's Finger Recheck

Noel had to get her finger rechecked today by Dr. Mel. It has already been 9 nine days and she is almost done with her antibiotics. The culture on it came back negative, but he was still very concerned. He told her it wasn't healing the way it should have and he wanted to change her antibiotics and give her a shot as well. Not good for Noel! She is terrified of shots and immediately went into panic mode. She called her dad to see if she had to have it (because I had told her she did!) and he of course said yes. She was not a happy camper and held onto me while Dr. Mel gave her a nice big one in the back hip. Oh boy, luckily she was half laying down because she went pale white and started to black out. We stayed in the room for a while and she's been resting all afternoon in the family room with her Cinnamon Pop Tarts and Power Aide I got her while picking up her prescription! Then later she took a warm bath and now is doing homework.
When Jeff came home he surprised her with a giant teddy bear that held a big red heart with the words "I Love You" on it! What a great daddy! Next visit - 5 days!!!

1-17-2010 Sunday - The River Sleep Weekend!

It seems like the river is the only place we can truly relax. Holly slept almost all day on Sunday - she was exhausted from her competitions the day before. She needed it.

Here are the boys, snoozing and hanging out one morning in bed!

Heidi slept on our bed too!

Here's Sasha passed out on our sofa yesterday!

Here's the pack rats in the back of our car on the way home. I think all of us had a nap at some point on this weekend getaway. It was great and just what we needed!

1-16-2010 Saturday - Holly's Competitions

Holly sang in the Southern California Vocal Association Competition and the South Coast Singers Stars of Tomorrow Competition today. She sang the German song, "Gretchen am Spinnrade" for both competitions and did a great job. We found out that she made the final rounds and will be performing next month! Congrats Holly!

Here is her song in the morning and she did even better in the afternoon competition!

1-15-2009 Friday - London For One Night!

Hey everyone! We thought it would be fun to take a quick trip to London a few days ago, so we jumped over to our favorite spot, Five Crowns Restaurant!

Five Crowns is actually located in Corona del Mar on Pacific Coast Highway. This is where Jeff and I ate dinner with our parents the eve of our wedding June 21, 1986. Boy, that sounds like a long time ago! The kids love this restaurant too and it is always a treat when we go!

There is an authentic English telephone booth in front of Five Crowns. It's weird how you just don't see many public phones anymore and here is one just sitting in this cute little booth! I wonder if it ever gets used???

We always find a reason to celebrate. That night we celebrated Noel being 14 and being able to go to the church dances. We sang her a birthday song and made her stand up so everyone knew she was the birthday girl. The souffles here are marvelous too!

1-11-2010 Monday - Am I A Bad Mother?

Have you ever felt like a bad mother???
Well, reality struck hard yesterday as I took my girls to the doctor. You see, with five kids, you never really know which injury to take seriously... You have to go through the weeding out of the whining, crying, being too tired, and if it's REAL pain process. And then you still wait so you can take the lump sum together for a group doctor visit! Otherwise, I would be making a visit every other week to some form of doctor - be it an Opthamologist, ENT, Orthopedic, or Neuro Surgeon! So, yesterday was our day to go. You see, we had filled our quota of 3 certifiable medical reasons to make our way to see Dr. Melahoures. I love his office because you can get just about anything done there. He has a hearing test booth, x-ray machine, eye exam area, and a mini lab all in one office. And he's not afraid to prescribe medication. It seems like I have to beg and plead any time I go to the pediatrician nowadays! (Does anyone else feel like this???)
Injury #1 - Last Friday night Shera was carrying our dog, Sasha, down the stairs, slipped and fell down 4 steps, sliding down her back and jamming her shoulder. She cried a lot, but it was bed time and we crossed our fingers it would be fine in the morning. Now Shera is a very sensitive little girl and yearns for the cuddle factor. So when she complained about her arm and shoulder over the weekend, we would love her up and she'd get out of doing her chores.
And then Sunday night came...
Injury # 2 - If any one knows our little Noel, then you are aware how she is the accident prone one in our family. Noel has cracked her skull in two places, has had countless sprains, knee injuries and stitches 3 times - but should have about 5 times (more neglect!). Apparently, she had a few bad falls on the slopes 3 weeks ago (no one told me about) and she has not been able to use her left hand.
Injury # 3 - This happened back in September. Noel's cute little hamster (NOT) bit her when she was trying to break up a fight with Shera's hamster. It was a pretty nasty chomp on her right middle finger, but we put on good 'ol Neosporin and wrapped it up. A month later, it seemed okay except some funny bumps had appeared. Jeff, being the official squeezer in the family, took care of it and again, more Neo. A week later, the skin started peeling around it. A rebirth of new skin? Okay, I'll accept that... But then she went and rubbed it up against an old wooden Cola crate and got a bunch of splinters in that exact spot. She pulled out what she could and put on Neo again. A couple of days later, Noel told me that her finger had still been hurting and she thought there were some splinters in there festering. I took her to the dermatologist (she had some funny bumps and another rash on her skin which made 3) and they pulled out the rest of the splinters and gave her another ointment of some sort. We thought it was getting better by December, and then it took a turn for the worse - but we were out of town (major Dr. pain then) and so busy, we put it off until last Sunday night...
Sunday night: Noel shows me her finger - swollen, bright red, and little bumps on it. I told her it's time to go to the real Dr. now and we would do it in the morning. Shera was holding her shoulder and asked "Can I go too?" How many kids ask to go to the doctor? Sigh...
Monday morning: Six x-rays later - no broken bones, but Shera's in a sling for a week with no P.E. for 10 days. Noel has a brace on her wrist for 1-2 weeks. They were checked for diabetes because of how dry their skin is (it's fun getting poked! ) but luckily they didn't. They just have really dry, cracking hands and they need to put more lotion on. Noel is on antibiotics for her finger with a recheck on Thursday. The doctor scolded me and said she should have been on meds right away. Her finger was so bad he had an x-ray done to see if the infection had gone to the bone. Luckily, it hadn't or he would have sent her to the hospital for an IV and up to a six week visit! Oh, and she may have permanent joint mobility issues too! So, for any of you moms who think you are not up to par - just think of me!!! P.S. Don't worry, I know I'm not a bad mom - sometimes I just feel like I am!!!

Here are Les Invalides...

Noel has to soak her finger in warm salt water 20 minutes 4 x a day.

1-10-2010 Sunday - Stephen Smith's Missionary Farewell

We heard our nephew, Stephen, speak today at church. He will be serving a full-time mission for two years in Washington D.C.
The thing that makes this such an exciting and unusual mission is that he will be speaking American Sign Language. He has already learned some sign language. Stephen will be a great missionary!

The kids loved being with their cousins too. Here is Luke and his cousin, Talia. They are good little buddies and they didn't even try to match their clothes. Pretty close, huh?

1-9-2010 Saturday - The Church Youth Nerd Dance!

Noel, Carissa, Allyse, and Holly were the coolest nerds at the dance last night!

1-9-2010 Saturday - A Fish Out of Water...

One of my childhood favorites...
Mr. Carp made Otto small again!

Now, we have our own Otto, but we call him "Fat Fish"! The story goes like this...

Drew's friend, Justin Smith, moved away to Utah and asked us to watch his turtle for a couple of months until he could arrange to bring him up. Flash forward 8 years later and we still have Gimp (he has nubs for back legs)!

Drew would occasionally pick up goldfish for Gimp to have as a special treat, but because he is handicapped, it was hard for him to catch them. One tiny 3/4 inch goldfish was just too quick to be caught. He grew up in the five years we have had him to become Fat Fish!

Now, I thought goldfish only lived a year, maybe two if you are lucky.
But this big guy is indestructible!

He is 6 1/2 inches long now and has stretch marks! He is bigger than Gimp and takes all the turtle food. We don't even intentionally feed him!!!

It looks like my childhood storybook came true...

1-9-2010 Saturday - Leap Year...

We actually went on a date last night! It was so much fun having Jeff all to myself for once! We always want to include our kids, we forget to take some time for just us. So we went out for Italian food, walked around, went to Trader Joe's (my fave!), and then saw the movie Leap Year. It was such a cute, feel good, romantic comedy - we loved it! I have to say it was very predictable, but what chick flick isn't? Perfect for a date movie - there were tons of couples in the theater; I forgot what that was like! Here is a taste of what it is about:
After four years of waiting for her boyfriend to propose, Amy decides to follow an old Irish custom that allows the woman to propose on February 29th. However, a funny thing happens on her way to pop the question...
This movie stars Amy Adams (Enchanted) and Matthew Goode (Chasing Liberty) and they are so cute together. Try not to watch the trailer - it will give too much away.
Go see it with your sweetie!!!

1-8-2010 Friday - A New Year...

A New Year........

What can I say about a New Year.....

I've been thinking about resolutions...

I usually make them, but I really don't know if I can truly in my heart pull out the energy to do more.....

So, I'm just going to say, that my resolution this year is that I will find peace within myself and be at peace with what life brings....

So here's to you, New Year, let it be a peaceful one.....

1-8-2010 Friday - The First Five!!!!

I signed up to be "The First Five" earlier this year on my friend's, Shelby's, post. And this is what I received in November - a wonderful collection of handmade cards! So, now it's my turn. And this is how it goes...

The first five...People to leave a comment on this post will receive something made by me.
However, there are some limitations:
1. I make no guarantee that you will like what I make.
2. What I create will be just for you.
3. It will be done this year.... by December 2010.
4. You have no clue what it is going to be - cards, bows, shoes, a bag, frames or a little invention of my own. I may even bake something and mail it to you . Who knows? Not you that's for sure!
5. I reserve the right to do something extremely strange. It may blow your mind!

Here's the catch, if you choose to do this, you must post this on your blog and be ready to make something for five people too. This will be fun! When you receive the fabulous item I make you, you must post a picture of it on your blog.

12-31-2009 Thursday - Happy New Year!

A great way to start out New Year's Eve...
Dear Holly,
Congratulations! You have been admitted to Utah State University...
Two down, one to go...

Santa brought us a new old fashioned Popcorn Popper for the theater! We are beginning to prep for the New Year's Eve party!

We were so busy, we didn't take any photos during the party, but here is the aftermath of about 30 of Drew's friends. Holly, Noel and two friends went to the tri-stake New Year's Eve dance and had a great time too!

Today, we've been lounging around watching the Rose Parade, football games including the Rose Bowl, playing on the computer, taking naps, and EATING!!!!!!
Happy New Year!

12-28-2009 Monday - Noel is Finally 14!!!

How can this cute little thing be fourteen???
Noel wanted to have her birthday dinner at Crossroads Cafe in Parker, Arizona. Good thing we were at the river already - only a 30 minute drive from there!

We came back and opened gifts.

Her favorite gift was this one - The Rosetta Stone for French! She's been on it since we arrived home and installed it on her computer.

Noel's favorite birthday cake of all time - Texas Sheet Cake with extra chocolate!

Noel's new Mia Maid Adviser, Sister Paula Barnes, brought over a cute Candy Gram for her too! She's so excited to be in Mia Maids and go to the church dances now too! Here comes New Year's Eve!

12-27-2009 Sunday - The River For A Break!

We love going to the river during the holidays especially. It is a place where we can relax and do nothing or do a ton of things. This year we watched a total of 10 movies in four days! We also did this 100 Dogs and A Cat puzzle.

We all took naps at some point - here's Holly and Noel sacking out after a big shopping spree at K-Mart!

Drew, Holly, and Noel played a few games of their favorite - Swashbuckler!

We had fireworks one night!

Noel tap danced on some poppers that sounded so cool!

We had a family pow wow one morning on Jeff's and my bed...

We also ate at the Farmhouse Restaurant in Banning. They are famous for their biscuits and gravy and serve them all day long!
